The Corpus Christi festival in Zahara is the only one in Andalusia to hold the title of Festival of National Tourist Interest, only held in Spain by Ponteareas (Pontevedra), Villa de Mazo (La Palma), Sitges (Barcelona), the Octaves of the Corpus in La Orotava (Tenerife), Peñalsordo (Badajoz), and the dances of the Octave of the Corpus in Valverde de los Arroyos (Guadalajara), apart from Toledo, the only Corpus festival in Spain that has been declared of International Tourist Interest. The Corpus festival in Zahara was declared to be of National Tourist Interest on 24th April 1980.
Thus, when the distinction of Festival of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia was established, the Corpus Christi of Zahara was declared as such, as were other festivals celebrated in our region, such as the Pilgrimage to Rocio, Holy Week in Seville, the April Fair and the Pilgrimage to the Virgin of Cabeza in Andujar (Jaen), to mention but a few. The decree declaring the Corpus of Zahara as being of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia was issued by the Regional Ministry of Tourism and Sport by its order of 20th May 1997 (BOJA [Official Gazette of the Regional Government of Andalusia] no. 64, of 5th June 1997).
